Women’s History Month
Being celebrated March 1-31, 2021
I was a young woman when President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first national Women’s History Week for March 2-8, 1980. At that time, I was not only a Theatre Major, but also a Women’s Studies minor at Miami University. In 1987, Congress passed a proclamation establishing Women’s History Month. Since then, this month has long been part of my consciousness. Since then, Women’s History Month has upheld and recognized the achievements of and impact made by women in the United States. Since then, the world has continued to evolve, change, and benefit from women’s contributions.
With 58.3% of the civilian labor force being women age 16+ per census data, and gender inequities still impacting women’s careers, sexual harassment and pay inequities in the workplace, there is still more to do to bring women’s contributions and struggles to light.
This year’s Women’s History Month theme is Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced. While many women worked for suffrage, what is not often as widely-acknowledged is the appalling racism that permeated the largest mainstream suffrage organizations. Women of every stripe did their part.
As a Chapter, we encourage communicators to recognize, thoughtfully consider, and address the intersectionalities that may divide women in society and in the workforce: race, ethnicity, class, education, civilian/military among them. It is our hope that employers, groups, and organizations will take advantage of data, resources, and events to amplify facts and gain new perspectives.
